“Meet Joe Black” (1998) — one of the quietest and most powerful scenes in the film. Death has taken on a human form in order to spend a few days among people. He walks down a hospital corridor like an ordinary visitor in an expensive suit, and no one around suspects who is in front of them. No one — except an elderly woman in a wheelchair. She raises her eyes to him and suddenly recognizes him. She is not frightened and does not call for help — she speaks to him in her native tongue, calmly, as to someone she has long been waiting for. And Joe himself, encountering for the first time a person who sees right through him, is thrown off balance: he is used to arriving unnoticed. The whole scene relies not on effects, but on two faces and a few lines. It is after this that Joe begins to understand what human life is and why people cling to it so tightly. Film: “Meet Joe Black” (1998), directed by Martin Brest. Starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, and Claire Forlani.
